General guidance, not instructions for your bike

Everything on PedalSpokeCove is general maintenance guidance written for bicycles and e-bikes as a class. It is not an instruction manual for your specific bike, and nobody writing it has seen the machine you are working on, its history, or the condition of its components. Where this site and the documentation that came with your bike disagree, the manufacturer documentation is the one to follow, without exception.

Work you choose to do

Bicycle maintenance involves tools, chemicals, moving parts and components whose failure has consequences. You are responsible for deciding whether a job is within your ability and for the results of that decision. Every task page on this site carries an explicit section describing the point at which the work should stop and go to a qualified mechanic, and those sections are there to be taken seriously rather than skimmed.

Brakes, steering, forks, frames, load-bearing hardware, helmets and e-bike batteries and electrics are the areas where this matters most. If you are unsure about any of them, the site’s answer is the same every time: take it to a shop.

Torque figures and specifications

This site does not publish torque figures for individual components. Those figures belong to the manufacturer of the part in your hands, they differ between materials, and a figure carried across from a similar part is a good way to damage an expensive one. Where a figure is needed, the site directs you to the manufacturer documentation.

The calculators

The service planner and the tire pressure calculator produce estimates from simple published formulas, and both pages print those formulas and list what they leave out. A suggested pressure never overrides the range molded into your tire sidewall, and a suggested interval never overrides the service schedule that came with your bike. Treat both outputs as starting points to adjust from.

External links and products

Links to standards bodies, government agencies and manufacturers are provided so you can read the primary source. This site does not control those pages and is not responsible for their content. Product links are affiliate links, described in full on the Affiliate Disclosure page, and product descriptions report what the manufacturer listing states rather than any independent assessment.

Content and changes

The writing, structure and original graphics on this site belong to PedalSpokeCove. Quoting a short passage with a link back is fine; republishing pages is not. These terms may be updated, and the date at the top of this page changes when they are. Questions go to [email protected].
